In a world where processed food is so prevalent, there is a need to go back to basics, cave man times even, when eating was based on what was found in nature. This type of diet can also aid in weight loss and serve to improve the quality of life. These are the building blocks the Paleo Diet is built on. Read on to find out more.

What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet was created by Loren Cordain, Ph.D. It is based on the observation of how the average human body has changed over the years. Cavemen were typically fit while today, the average man or woman is overweight. This observation caused nutritional experts to research how things got so out of hand, and diet was one thing that was brought into close consideration.

The theory is that it was grains and sugars, which the body does not process well, as well as a lack of exercise, that got us to where we are today. The Paleo Diet aims to get us back to eating how we are biologically designed to eat to get people healthier and better able to manage weight.

Cordain has several books as well as a web site that offers information, recipes and support for dieters.

Exercise on the Paleo Diet

While there is no set exercise routine on the Paleo Diet, physical activity is strongly encouraged. Cavemen were much more active than humans are today, and this is said to contribute to the health problems and added weight many people deal with.

Nutrition on the Paleo Diet

Grains and sugars are both out of the question on the Paleo Diet. Dairy is also something that is not recommended as most cavemen did not drink milk. Some that follow the Paleo Diet less strictly than others may still add dairy to their diet. Those that choose not to include dairy in their diet may run the risk of not getting enough calcium.

Foods that can be can be consumed includes grass fed meat, fowl, fish, eggs, vegetables, oils, fruits, nuts and tubers. Carbs are okay as long as they come from natural sources like fruits and vegetables.
